About event

🏙️ PROGRAM
City tour with Sabine Krusen

Sometimes it's difficult to keep track. Born as Brendel Mendelssohn on October 24, 1764 in Berlin, she was married at the age of 18 to the merchant Simon Veit, who was 10 years her senior, and was now called Brendel Veit. After the divorce in 1799, she gave up her Jewish first name and called herself Dorothea.

From this point on she lived freely and publicly with Friedrich Schlegel in order to form a living and working community in Jena, where a center of literary romanticism was established with Novalis, Ludwig Tieck and Schelling. There she was also inspired to write her first volume of the novel Florentin (1801), which was published anonymously under the editorship of Friedrich Schlegel and in which she emulated Goethe's Wilhelm Meister and Tieck's Franz Sternbald's Wanderings. In 1804 she married Friedrich Schlegel in Paris and went down in history as Dorothea Schlegel.

Her courage to separate from her unloved husband and, as the lover and later wife of the co-founder of early romanticism Friedrich Schlegel, to demand her right to happiness, contrary to Jewish tradition and strict social norms, made her a pioneer of female emancipation.
