About event
Spicy Bratislava invites listeners to look into the intimate and often hidden side of the capital's past - from brothels and street prostitution to wedding nights and marital "obligations" in lavish palaces and modest residences.
The focus will be on brothels and prostitution, which have been a fixed, although officially rejected, part of city life since the Middle Ages.
Bratislava, then known as Prešporok, was an important trade and transport hub, which naturally brought the presence of soldiers, merchants, sailors and craftsmen - ideal customers for pleasure houses.
Records reveal that prostitution was regulated by regulations, licensing and mandatory medical examinations.
Some houses had discreet markings – red lamps, specific signboards. The lecture will describe where these houses stood, how they functioned and what life was like for the women who worked in them.
The topic will also touch upon society's view of sexuality and "moral purity". While the church and officials called for restraint, the reality was much more varied. The lecture will also include stories from the archives up to the year 1948, when most of the famous prostitutes were taken to re-education camps.
A special part will be devoted to the wedding night and the idea of marital duties. In traditional society, the wedding night had not only a private but also a social dimension – it was a kind of ritual to confirm the marriage and legitimize the future offspring. We will take a closer look at what expectations were placed on newlyweds, what advice young brides received, and how these ideas changed during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The next topic will be marital obligations – a concept that may sound archaic from today's perspective, but was once firmly enshrined in laws and religious regulations. We'll talk about how the "obligation of married cohabitation" was defined, how disputes about infidelity, impotence or "denial of the right to the conjugal bed" were resolved, and what the court files of the time reveal about these topics.
Tickling Bratislava will bring the atmosphere of a city where different cultures, languages and customs met. In the multi-ethnic environment of Prešpork, German, Hungarian, Slovak, Jewish and other traditions were mixed, which created a varied palette of approaches to intimacy and sexuality.
Listeners will be transported to the alleys and corners of historic Bratislava, we will not even bypass the sinful Vydrica.
With the help of maps, illustrations and photographs that capture places with "ancillary services", we will recall the ticklish history of the city, a valuable testimony of how people lived, loved and sought pleasure. spoke.
