About event
The history of Bratislava is not only a story of coronations, battles and major political events. Behind the walls of city houses, in narrow streets and in backyards, stories took place that were rarely recorded in the chronicles - but they shaped everyday life as much as economic or cultural history.
Tickling Bratislava invites you to look into the intimate and often hidden side of the capital's past - from brothels and street prostitution to wedding nights and marital "obligations" in lavish palaces and modest residences.
The spotlight will be on brothels and prostitution, which have been a fixed, although officially rejected, part of city life since the Middle Ages.
Bratislava, then known as Prešporok, was an important trade and transport hub, which naturally brought the presence of soldiers, merchants, sailors and craftsmen - ideal customers for pleasure houses.
Some houses had discreet markings - red lamps, specific signboards. The lecture will describe where these houses stood, how they functioned and what life was like for the women who worked in them.
The topic will also touch upon society's view of sexuality and "moral purity". While the church and officials called for restraint, the reality was much more varied. The tour will also include stories from the archives.
A special part will be dedicated to the wedding night and the idea of marital duties. Let's take a closer look at what expectations were placed on newlyweds, what advice young brides received, and how these ideas changed during the 18th and 19th centuries. In the multi-ethnic environment of Prešpork, German, Hungarian, Slovak, Jewish and other traditions were mixed, which created a varied palette of approaches to intimacy and sexuality.
Transport yourself to the streets and corners of historic Bratislava.
With the help of maps, illustrations and photos that capture places with "ancillary services", we will remind you of the fascinating history of the city, a valuable testimony of how people lived, loved and sought pleasure.
