About event

How do you capture a city in poems? What words do you find for its inhabitants, what concerns them and what happens to them? The city poet faces that challenge. We examine this challenge with various city poets from the Netherlands and Flanders. How does urban poetry differ from city to city? What is special about being a city poet of their cities?

On the line-up:
Ellen Deckwitz and Lisette Ma Neza have both been city poets of their capital since this year: Ellen van Amsterdam, Lisette van Brussel. They discuss their city, the poetry they wrote about it and for it and recite it.

In Kortrijk the city poet is called 'Letterzetter'. De Letterzetter guides a collective of young wordsmiths and prepares them for the professional circuit. Here, city poetry is also a talent development program. Astrid Haerens was until recently the typesetter of Kortrijk and will talk about this special interpretation of city poetry. She also brings along one of the talented wordsmiths from the collective: Martijn Verhelst.

Swendeline Ersilia is city poet of Dordrecht. She feels the responsibility of that position and believes it is important to give it an activist interpretation. What is going on in her city and how does she give voice to it?

Amsterdam not only has a city poet, but also a city illustrator. Rossel Chaslie has been the new city illustrator of Amsterdam since April. Where a city poet uses the word, he tries to capture the city in an image. How does he work?

'Sing your city': Together with the Flemish-Dutch Huis deBuren, we challenged poets, many of whom work as city or village poets, to capture their city in a poem and to be submitted as a video. From the contributions of 26 enthusiastic participants from all over the Netherlands and Flanders, we put together a short compilation that we will show.

This program is a collaboration with deBuren and the second part of a diptych about and with city poets. The first part, Battle of the City Poets, took place on November 8 in Brussels during We will continue, the festival in honor of deBuren's 20th anniversary.
