Reading & conversation with Patrik Baab
The journalist and author Patrik Baab, Lange for the NDR, will be presenting on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. Tor218 Artlab (Torstraße 218, Berlin-Mitte) presented his current book.
Baab reports about his research in Ukraine-initially in the west shortly before the start of the war, later in the east after the Russian march. His claim: to make both sides to be heard "and also make the fates of farmers, soldiers, hiking workers and civilians visible. In his work, he spans the arch from Maidan in 2014 to war in Donbass to what he describes as a deputy war between Russia and NATO.
In particular, these interpretations have caused severe criticism that central statements are not covered by the state of research. In 2013/14, the Maidan was not a coup movement, but a democratic revolt; The war in Donbass started with Russian interventions; And the war goals of the Kremlin pursued their own logic, regardless of NATO action. Several cities and institutions have therefore controversially discussed or canceled events - while he himself speaks of a media campaign against his person and interprets the judgment on his lost and re -enforced teaching position at the University of Kiel as a strengthening of the freedom of the press. The reading in Berlin offers the opportunity to deal directly with the author, ask questions and to explore the voltage fields of reporting, interpretation and scientific criticism in direct conversation.
