About event
*In addition to the director, the former mayor of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, JoAnn Yukimura (1949), will take part in the screening. The core consisted of young American students fighting against the establishment. They were quickly sent to the local jail for protesting and loitering. When Howard Taylor and his sister, the famous actress Elizabeth Taylor, found out about it, they bailed them out and gave them their most beautiful piece of land on the island. The community worked and grew for 8 years. It was made up of a wide range of people, from war veterans from Vietnam, to surfers, to families with children. They lived in tree houses and lived on food that they grew themselves. Here, people formed a cooperative community without being bound by laws and regulations - but united by a desire for freedom.
American filmmaker and photographer John Wehrheim captured their life in more than 100 pictures, which you can see at the exhibition in Bratislava's Danubiana from the end of October to December. On this occasion, John will also come from Hawaii to Žilina to screen the documentary film On the Edge of Paradise, telling the story of a utopian community that, like the Woodstock festival, became a symbol of the hippie movement. The artist John Wehrheim is a renaissance man - he founded the largest banana and papaya plantations in Hawaii, and as an engineer he built hydroelectric plants around the world. It was thanks to this activity that he got to the Kingdom of Bhutan, where he made a documentary film, for which he won two Emmy awards. He currently lives in Hawaii with his wife and politician JoAnn Yukimura, the first woman of Asian origin to become a mayor in the USA.
A documentary film was created together with a book of photographs in 2018, updated with the statements of the then residents of the dream paradise . We will show the film in English with Slovak subtitles. A native of Považská Bystrica, Adam Ligas, who lived on the Hawaiian Islands for two years, will moderate the discussion with John about the lost paradise, the 70s in the USA and also about life in Hawaii at the moment. He met John by chance as a waiter, and later completed a 6-month internship with him. They became friends and he also got to know John's other adventures.
