It is possible that in the pursuit of progress, justice and sensitivity, we are reaching a point where liberalism is losing its own foundation - tolerance for dissent and openness to diversity opinions?
Is cancel culture a natural development or an ideological mistake?
Doesn't it harm liberalism that it often seems elitist, moralizing or detached from ordinary people?
In the next episode of the Center of Opinions, we meet in a debate that will not only be about politics - but also about what happens to our values when they change to brands, moral signals or weapons in culture wars.
Why right now?
In Slovakia, the word "liberal" has become a swear word. Liberal values - freedom of speech, equality before the law, protection of minorities, open society - are the basis of modern democracies. But voices are increasingly being heard that these principles are threatened not from the outside, but from the inside: excessive sensitivity, ideological purity, cancel culture or the rejection of opinion pluralism.
But who is to blame?
Only the politicians who spread hatred, or the liberals themselves, who cannot communicate with those who are to blame, are to blame. who thinks differently? Right now, when the polarization in society is deepening, and when even well-intentioned attitudes provoke resistance, it is time to look in the mirror.
And ask ourselves an unpleasant question: Are we destroying liberal values from the inside by how we promote them?

Matej je a recognized academic and political scientist who currently teaches at the political science department of the CEU in Vienna. His research focuses on ethics and modern political philosophies. He is the author of the book "Liberals and the Others", as well as a former great academic debater.

Veronika has been active in the field of youth development, research and media for many years. Today she is the executive director of the Milan Šimečka Foundation. For years she worked as a successful debater and debate coach, developed communication and argumentation skills of young people in Slovakia and abroad, led educational projects for the international debate association IDEA. He is also engaged in social science and marketing research.
For the Youth Council of Slovakia, she carried out research with the aim of strengthening the voice of young people in our society.
✨ Jakub Kobela
Trainer of argumentation and communication skills. He created the methodology for debate education in 17 countries, as well as the communication strategy of the self-governing region. He is a former winner of the Czech and Slovak Academic Championships in debating.
