About event
British guitarist, composer and producer Stuart McCallum will be performing solo in the Czech Republic for the first time this year with the new EP "A Quiet Gathering", which was released this spring on Edition Records. The audience at Jazz Dock already knows McCallum from a concert with The Breath, but over the years he has also appeared in the Czech Republic as a member of The Cinematic Orchestra, Richard Spaven or Slowly Rolling Camera. During his career, he collaborated with significant personalities of contemporary music such as Jordan Rakei, Manu Delago, John Surman, Kenny Wheeler or Peter Gabriel.
The new EP "A Quiet Gathering" presents McCallum in an extremely intimate position. Five compositions on the border between jazz, folk and ambient were created with an emphasis on spatial and immersive listening. Here, McCallum re-approaches jazz standards such as "Alice In Wonderland" or "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" and places melody, silence and atmosphere in the foreground instead of complex harmonies. The music seems fragile and concentrated, but at the same time offers a rich sound space inspired by folk and modern ambient.
McCallum's work is based on a deep search for a distinctive sound and at the same time an openness to new technologies. In his work, he explores the possibilities of immersive audio and tools using artificial intelligence, which he believes can add another emotional dimension to music. He works as a guitar professor at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
