About event

What future awaits the meadows of Veľká Fatra (and not only there) in today's changed economic conditions? Katarína Hegedüšová Vantarová, a long-time researcher at the Botanical Institute of the Center for Plant Biology and Biodiversity of the Slovak Republic, specializing in meadow communities, will try to answer these questions as well.

We invite you to the lecture Meadows of the Veľká Fatra National Park - Past, Present and Future on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. to the Andrej Kmeť Museum.

influence man. However, Veľká Fatra took the form of sticks only during the Wallachian colonization, which brought with it massive deforestation, an artificially reduced upper limit of the forest and the creation of a continuous stick complex of approximately 3000 ha.

Herding and traditional mowing transformed the original biotopes into a mosaic of rare, species-rich meadow communities with a number of endangered species and also endemics.

The decline of traditional farming and high-altitude mountaineering already at the beginning of the 20th century led to the gradual degradation of habitats and significant changes. Meadows and pastures began to be overgrown with competitively strong species, especially expansive grasses and also invasive woody plants from the nearby area, which displace the vast majority of valuable herbs.

This process may seem gradual from the point of view of a layman, but from the point of view of experts, these are very rapid changes, when species-rich, flowering grass-herb communities become monotonous, with only a few species stands without a lot of brightly colored flowers.

The lecture at the Andrej Kmeť Museum is part of the program of regular popularization-educational meetings in the museum premises under the name "Thursdays in the Museum".
