About event
MUSIC THEATER BY SAMUEL PENDERBAYNE AND
THERESA VON HALLE, LIBRETTO ACCORDING TO MOTIVES
BY FERDINAND VON SCHIRACH
A young German-Turkish woman is studying law. The law should protect me and everyone – that is the motivation for Seyma, who grew up in an environment characterized by patriarchal violence. In her first case as a criminal defense attorney, she takes on the defense of a suspected pimp and internationally wanted human trafficker. This brings her into a serious inner conflict when a witness shows up unannounced and describes the atrocities her client has committed against various women. Seyma wants to withdraw from the case. However, the judge forces her to continue the mandate. After the defendant has been convicted, Seyma - as is expected of her as a defense attorney - appeals, with a result that is difficult to convey Gasag, the creative team Samuel Penderbayne and Theresa von Halle approach the complex character of Seyma by having a singer, an actress and a pianist express the different sides of the protagonist. We are now showing the one-act musical theater play SUBOTNIK, which premiered in June 2022, again and expanded to include new texts on the subject of law and original statements from Berlin and Hamburg criminal defense lawyers.
