Great! presents
Drugdealer in exceptional concert on October 23, 2024 at La Bellevilloise!
Box office opening this Friday, May 24 at 10:00 a.m.: https://link.dice.fm/i46bfa4df847
Drugdealer's third album, Hiding in Plain Sight, almost didn't see the light of day. Frustrated and unsure of his own voice before the pandemic, Drugdealer founder and primary songwriter Michael Collins was almost ready to throw in the towel. With hits like "Suddenly" and "The Real World" (from the band's 2016 debut album, The End Of Comedy) and "Honey" (from their 2019 debut album for Mexican Summer, Raw Honey), Collins had reason to be happy. But due to a frequent impulse to cede the mic to friends and collaborators like Weyes Blood, Jackson MacIntosh and his faithful musical companion Sasha Winn, Collins became increasingly unsure of himself as a singer. It was then that, in the windswept art colony of Marfa, Texas, a chance encounter with visionary artist and composer Annette Peacock changed his outlook.
While he was attending Mexican Summer's annual Marfa Myths festival, Collins ran into Peacock backstage. “I was very inspired by Annette. But like all the other singers I had worked with, I didn't feel like I was up to it," he recalls. "I told him about my difficulties, then I played him a song and she told me I wasn't singing high enough for my speaking voice. When I returned to Los Angeles, I started inventing new progressions, which I modulated by three half steps. to find a new way of singing.”
