--- - EZRA COLLECTIVE ----
With the release of their debut album You Can't Steal My Joy in 2019, widely praised by critics, Ezra Collective helped to restore the British jazz scene to new heights unpublished after having ignited the Glastonbury festival that same year. Despite the arrival of the pandemic which put their projects on hold, their highly anticipated second album Where I'm Meant To Be is a thrilling celebration of life and will continue to propel them onto the most beautiful stages, not only in the jazz universe but also well beyond. Capable of shaking up the ancient Jazz Theater in Vienna as much as the Boiler Room, the five musicians continue to rise in the esteem of many music lovers who see in them a true revival that combines jazz, dub and Latin sounds with a afrobeat matrix worthy of the greats Fela Kuti and Tony Allen.
The group - composed of Femi (who is also drummer for Gorillaz) as drummer and bandleader, Joe Armon-Jones on keyboards, James Mollison on saxophone, Ife Ogunjobi on trumpet and Femi's younger brother TJ on bass - originally formed in 2012 when the still-teenage members were members of the group Tomorrow's Warriors, an education initiative musical at the South Bank Center in London. Since then, they have established themselves as the architects of a new phase in their city's musical landscape, and as the leaders of a hybrid era in which black genres - jazz, grime, afrobeat and more - can fit together and s harmonize fluidly, at ever higher levels.
In 2024, Ezra Collective announces a new, even more ambitious tour, which will include the Olympia in Paris and the Wembley Arena in London, on the occasion of the release of their new song ''Ajala''. Named after legendary Nigerian journalist and globetrotter Olabisi Ajala - whose Yoruba slang name means a person who can never sit still - the track opens the door to the new era of Ezra Collective with euphoric abandon and white-hot afrobeat instrumentation, and promises to be the sequel to the album Where I'm Meant To Be. While recording the track at Abbey Road, the band were surprised in the studio by a group of close friends/family, transforming the session into a live community celebration of love, music and (most importantly) the universal experience of dance. A very promising taste, which foreshadows a tour which already promises to be historic.
