About event

Dear friends of Freedom and all people of good will,

We cordially invite you on the occasion of the national holiday 17 November - The Day of the Fight for Freedom and Democracy:

HOLY MASS FOR THE VICTIMS OF UNFREEDOM AND PEACE IN SOCIETY
- Monday, 17.11.2025 at 6 p.m., Cathedral of St. Martina
- celebrated by Bratislava Auxiliary Bishop Mons. Jozef Haľko
- we also commemorate the feast of St. Elizabeth of Bratislava, also called Uhorská, patron of charity

PEACEFUL GATHERING FOR REAL FREEDOM AND FAIR DEMOCRACY
- Monday, 17.11.2025 at 7 p.m., Rudnay Square (under the cathedral)

17. November marks the 36th anniversary of the Gentle Revolution and the end of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, which brought about the restoration of basic human, civil and religious freedoms.
We also commemorate International Students' Day and their courageous resistance to the Nazi occupation of Prague in 1939, which resulted in nine students being executed, all universities closed and more than 1,200 students deported to concentration camps camps.

We consider it important to remember in a dignified and calm manner the danger of unfree regimes of the past and present and their victims at home and in the world. First, we will pray together for the victims of unfreedom and Peace in a divided society.
This will be followed by a civic gathering on the occasion of November 17. We invite you to bring a candle with which we will honor the victims of non-freedom.

Together with public figures, we will consider:
- What is the legacy of the Candle Manifestation of 1988 and the Gentle Revolution of 1989 for today and how to be consistently faithful to it with respect for the ancestors who strived for Freedom?
- Freedom is not a matter of course - what would we stand for should they have been grateful today?
- What do we need to work on as a society in the topics of basic freedoms and fair pluralistic democracy?

Beáta Katrebová Blehová, historian from ÚPN, will speak at the civic assembly; Branislav Borovský, vice-president of the Confederation of Political Prisoners of Slovakia; Ján Szőllős, vice-president of the Ecumenical Council of Churches in Slovakia; Vladimír Palko, columnist and former Christian Democratic politician, as well as other rare personalities. The gathering will be accompanied musically by Peter Janků.

You are warmly welcome, come. There are many people of good will in Slovakia - let's unite for the common good.
We invite you to bring a candle with which to honor the victims of lack of freedom and persecution.
