In what state did the Czech theater find itself after the so-called "Victorious February" 1948?
What dramatic texts were encouraged in society, and what conditions and guidelines did playwrights have to follow in order for plays to be published and performed in theaters? In what way did the communists use the theater as a tool of propaganda for socialism? What exactly is socialist realism? In what style could the directors create and what freedom did they have? What is Expo 58 and lantern magic?
What events influenced and caused the "thaw" period of the early 1960s? What does it mean to say "small form movement"? What famous theaters were created during this movement? Who were Otomar Krejča and Jan Grossman? What was "appeal theater"? What repertoire was characteristic of the National Theater in Prague during this period, and what repertoire was characteristic of Brno? How did the theater subsequently change during the normalization period? What role did the theater play during the Velvet Revolution? What topics did the dramas deal with after 1989?
The lecture from the World of Theater series presented by theater expert Milan Hábl will focus on answering these and other questions related to the Czech theater and its transformations during the second half of the last century.
