WHAT IS THE VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS GHOST STORY TRADITION?
Even before the industrial revolution, the shorter days and cold nights around Christmas and the winter solstice meant people would spend more time huddled around the fire.

Whether caused by the shadowy candlelight or just by coincidence, spooky tales, especially about ghosts, became a common theme.

Then, with the invention of the printing press, the price of books fell dramatically, and demand skyrocketed. Magazines and periodicals were crying out for these stories and the first wave of ghost story writing authors, like Conan Doyle, Gaskell, and Margaret Oliphant were only too happy to write through the autumn to ensure the pages were full.

The work of Charles Dickens, most famously in his classic novella, A Christmas Carol¸ cemented his place in the tradition. He went on to write several other Christmas stories, specifically featuring ghosts and compiled ghost stories from others for the magazines he was editing.

The tradition was picked up by BBC television in the 1970s with their annual production of A Ghost Story for Christmas, often adapting a classic Victorian ghost story.

On December 13th, we will recreate the spirit of this tradition for a good cause. All proceeds go to buy essential goods for a refugee relief foundation.

Hope to see you there!
