"It is not possible to create a safe haven by creating a disaster for others," says Israeli historian Ilan Pappé about the creation of the state of Israel after World War II in the myth-busting documentary film Tantura.

To explore the validity of this powerful statement, director Alon Schwarz ("Aida's Secret") focuses on the Israeli seaside town of Tantura. A once prosperous Palestinian Arab fishing village that became the site of a massacre by the Zionist Alexandroni Brigade at the start of the 1948 campaign for control of Palestine - seen by Israelis as a war of independence. To Palestinians, the beginning of their tragic displacement known as the Nakba.

Details of what happened in Tantura more than 70 years ago have long remained secret - a taboo subject that contradicts the idealized self-image of the Israeli state. However, in the late 1990s, student Teddy Katz, as part of his master's thesis, interviewed many members of the Jewish militias who were involved. What followed and what it caused is not something you would expect in a democratic society.

Discussion after the film will be attended by:

Sára Younis is half Czech and half Palestinian, and she sees Palestine not only as her family's story, but as part of her identity. She was only able to visit Palestine a few times, but part of her family still lives there. Sára has long been trying to bring authentic Palestinian reality, culture and everyday life closer to people in the Czech Republic, including through her work in the association Decolonize Palestine, where they are dedicated to sharing and translating news from Palestine into Czech.

Nataša Dudinski is a publicist and documentary filmmaker. She lived in Israel for almost 30 years. She originally went there in the early 1990s. This long-term stay enabled her to deeply understand the socio-political reality there, which she subsequently began to bring closer to the Czech and international audience.
She also worked for the independent internet magazine +972 Magazine, which provides reports and analyzes directly from Israel and Palestine. As part of this platform, he collaborates with the Palestinian investigative journalist and activist Basel Adra (Básil Adrá), who is one of the co-authors of the Oscar and other award-winning documentary film No Other Land (2024).
