Over the last decade there has been a contagion of forms and ideas from some traditional music entering electronic music. The phenomenon is not new and is one of those ideas that is recycled. Recycling matters because, without it, nowadays, it would be almost impossible to build on what already exists, or even on what is new. It is essential to feel how new generations appropriate an idea for the time in which they live, how they use this idea with the language and tools they use now. It's been happening everywhere, but from Catalonia came two of the most striking names that experiment with these ideas and put them in another room: Marina Herlop and Tarta Relena. Marina Herlop is one of those comets, she benefited from the context in which many people came to know her (the pandemic and exit from the pandemic), in addition to an inexhaustible stage presence, playing almost every week somewhere in the last two years . Tarta Relena, using a tender expression, have benefited less from public support. Ok, it's not that true, the duo composed of Marta Torrella and Helena Ros has played in recent years at many European electronic festivals – and beyond – and created an audience that embraces this identity that is both raw and heavenly.
And this is where Tarta Relena differentiates itself. Unlike other projects of the genre, whose connection is always more to electronics – to the present, to fashion, to the current – than to the traditional, they work on the idea of emptiness, echo, a notion of silence as something sacred. Take the next step. They experiment with sounds, they experiment above all, and first, with the voice. There is an a cappella principle, of listening to yourself in this register and moving on from there to the rest. Electronics is something that complements, that dresses and, if we may say so, it is not something that immediately makes us move. What moves us, what makes us want to exist in the same space as Tarta Relena's songs is the sensation of space that is created, by the pauses, the silences, the voids that exist between the words. There is never much time, it is the feeling that is immense. As if their music gives us time to listen to ourselves, reflecting, feeling an idea of the sacred that they themselves created with their music. Hear them at St. George seems more than appropriate. Until then, there are some good albums to discover: “Fiat Lux”, “És Pregunta” and “Ora Pro Nobis”. TO THE
