As a result of the Munich Agreement, which was concluded by Germany, Great Britain, France and Italy on September 29, 1938, the then Czechoslovakia had to cede 20 percent of its territory to Germany and other parts of the country to Hungary and Poland.

Exactly on October 10, 1938, units of the Czechoslovak Republic. army, police and customs officers left the Bratislava bridgehead.

German troops occupied Petržalka, which was part of Hitler's Great German Empire until the liberation of Bratislava on April 4, 1945.
Petržalka became Engerau.

On October 25, 1938, leader Adolf himself came to see the new border between the Third Reich and Czechoslovakia Hitler, who unexpectedly jumped here from a visit to nearby Vienna.

For the residents, this meant the immediate loss of their home or a radical change of life: many had to leave, others had to adapt to the regime. Suddenly, the Danube became a strict border, behind which stood uniforms, barbed wire and new prohibitions.

At the Bratislava Wanderings, we will remember these dramatic events through specific places: where the border posts were, how daily movement changed, what connection meant for the city's residents, and how Petržalka became a strategic outpost of Nazi Germany.
We will also talk about the planned reconstruction of the territory, lost sports grounds, the life of the people of Petržal under the swastika, but also about the dark past of the Engerau concentration camp.

Contemporary photographs, archival maps and testimonies will allow us to imagine what it was like when Bratislava stood on the edge – literally divided by the river and political events that heralded the Second World War.

This the tour is not only about history, but also about the memory of the place, where we can still find traces of border lines and forgotten stories of people whose lives were broken by 1938.
