About event
We are genuinely delighted to invite you to a very special evening:
Peter Karbe returns to Vienna after three years.
Few names resonate within the Leica world as deeply as his. As the visionary force behind Leica’s optical engineering, Peter Karbe represents that rare, unmeasurable human element that defines the Leica philosophy. With his team in Wetzlar, he has guided the evolution of the M-System and its lenses — crafting tools where precision, intuition, and craftsmanship converge into something uniquely Leica.
In his talk, Peter Karbe will take us on an intimate journey into the soul of the M.
He will revisit the origins of the Fodis rangefinder, Oskar Barnack’s ingenious solution for the first Leica I. The oversized 1939 demonstration model — today held by the Deutsches Museum in Munich — reveals the poetic simplicity of its principle: triangulation, the dance of two light paths merging into one perfectly aligned moment.
This lineage flows directly into the Leica M3 of 1954, where Leica unified all essential functions into a single, luminous viewfinder. Its 50, 90, and 135 mm frame lines became windows into possibility — a visual language that still defines M photography.
And yet, the true magic of the M remains unchanged:
You must pre-visualize. You must imagine the image before you take it — choose your aperture, guide your focus, trust your eye, and let the camera become an extension of your intention.
This is what makes the M a companion rather than a tool.
As Peter Karbe beautifully reminds us:
“The soul of Oskar Barnack continues to live in the M camera.”
Join us for an evening with one of the most influential minds behind the modern M-System — a rare opportunity to experience the passion, philosophy, and quiet perfectionism that continue to shape the world’s most iconic rangefinder.
