About event
The Necks - masters of their own musical language / Piano, bass, drums
For more than thirty years of their existence, The Necks have built an international reputation as masters of their own musical language. Their minimalistic, repetitive improvisation with piano, drums and bass sounds like it comes from a single, unknown instrument. They collaborated with artists such as: Brian Eno, Swans, Evan Parker, Karl Hyde and several symphony orchestras. 9 years ago they toured Australia as the opening act for Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, in 2019 they collaborated with Underworld on their new audiovisual series, and with Michael Gira on the Swans album. Trio The Necks recorded almost 30 albums and has a reputation as the best of the cult, stylistically unclassifiable bands. He creates finely structured soundscapes that draw on jazz and minimalism, freely crossing stylistic boundaries. Each of the members earned respect as a strong and independent personality - drummer Tony Buck accompanied jazzmen Branford Marsalis and Ernie Watts, leads the hardcore improv group Peril. Bassist Lloyd Swanton has released eight albums with his band The Catholics, with whom he has been nominated three times for the ARIA Awards, Australia's version of the Grammys. He gained great renown when he accompanied bluesman Jimmy Witherspoon and won the Australian Jazz and Blues Awards three times. The group has existed for over thirty years, its music is often described as trance jazz and as a continuation of European experimental groups such as Can or Faust. The group opened the door to the world with the album Hanging Gardens in 1999, followed by a tour in the USA and distribution in the network of the avant-garde British label ReR. Their album Open represents a musical labyrinth, created from many hours of improvisation and finally concentrated into a surface area of 68 minutes. The creative processes of the group follow the pioneer of ambient, Brian Eno, but the result has stronger dynamics, warm colors of instruments and warm emotions. The basic line-up on the album is enriched by organ and guitar with other instruments that create soundscapes on the edge of dream and fantasy. An even stronger experience is to see the group live - the concert will begin with a seemingly simple figure, which other players develop, adding new and new layers. From imperceptible changes, a majestic architecture of interpenetrating and crossing melodic lines is created in real time, which captivates the listener as easily as in other situations the inexorable rhythms of trance ceremonies. as masters of their own musical language. They have been touring Europe for over 20 years. Every Necks' performance is a singular event, entirely improvised and working with the acoustics of the room. Their minimalist, repetitive improvisation with piano, drums and bass sounds as if it comes from a single unknown instrument.
