You could call “The Old Oak” a neighborhood center. TJ Ballantyne's pub is the last place where people can meet in the former mining village in north-east England. Since the local mine closed following the 1984-85 miners' strike, many houses have been left empty. Syrian civil war refugees are now being accommodated there, which is not welcomed by everyone. But the young Syrian Yara becomes friends with the owner of the “Old Oak” and together with other volunteers they try to create a common project for everyone - regardless of whether they have lived here for decades or whether they came here because of the war. In an unused large back room of the “Old Oak”, food will be cooked for everyone and offered free of charge. But there is resistance, not everyone can imagine living together with the refugees.
The touching story about living together and cohesion in a village community with all its dangers is probably the last film by the Briton Ken Loach, who will be 90 next year. He is the grand master of social drama who gave a voice to the unseen throughout his work. “The Old Oak” premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 and won many awards. We show it at Christmas time as a sign of hope that solidarity and charity can defeat xenophobia and racism.
