Hardly any Rap crew shaped the scene in the 90s with as much ease, creativity and unique flow as The Pharcyde.
With their iconic second album “Labcabincalifornia” in 1995, they set new standards and wrote West Coast rap history.
Now they are celebrating the 30th anniversary of this classic and are bringing their unmistakable vibes to Berlin at the Astra Kulturhaus.
Founded in Los Angeles, The Pharcyde suddenly became known in the early 90s with their debut album “Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde” (1992).
With humorous, introspective lyrics and jazzy beats, they brought a fresh alternative to the gangsta rap sound that was dominant at the time.
"Passin' Me By" became a classic and is still an integral part of the Golden Era of rap.
In 1995, another masterpiece followed with "Labcabincalifornia", known for its deep, soulful sound and iconic production by J Dilla.
Tracks like “Runnin’” and “Drop” showed musical development and are considered milestones in the genre. The iconic video for the album's first single, "Drop," was directed by Spike Jonze and featured footage of the group playing the song backwards, giving it a surreal quality.
The influence of this album is still felt today, inspiring generations of artists.
