Author and theater director Falk Richter returns to his own family history in his autofictional play The Silence. His father died before he could talk openly with his son and reconcile.
In his dialogue with his mother, Richter focuses on truths that have not been spoken about for decades, on displaced secrets and unresolved traumas that still haunt him today.< br/>How were the atrocities that his father experienced during the war written into the family history and his parents' marriage, what traces did the trauma of his mother's expulsion and flight from West Prussia leave? What was hidden in the family for years?
How did the author and his sister grow up in post-war provincial West Germany, how was their family formed? How was the author's homosexual identity, which began to manifest itself in adolescence, suppressed and suppressed by his parents?
How did they react to the homophobic hostility he experienced? How did trauma, silence, and violent suppression continue in the author's own relationships?
The confrontation between mother and son becomes a path into the abyss of West German bourgeois society from the post-war period to the present. However, how reliable is the author's own memory, how believable is the mother's life story? And couldn't everything be completely different? The autobiographical and fictional planes soon begin to merge, memories contradict each other and a completely different reality cannot be ruled out.
In the play with autobiography and fiction, in the contradictions of one's own history, hope also sprouts: what other models of masculinity and therefore other types of fatherhood and parenting are possible? What forms of relationships exist outside of patriarchal oppression and violence? What could a completely different life look like?
