Few jazz bands have achieved such cult status as the Yellowjackets, founded in 1980. The quartet, which emerged from the band around guitar legend Robben Ford, has been on stage for 43 years and can look back on a history of 25 recorded albums, 17 Grammy nominations, two Grammy Awards and sold-out tours worldwide. But they don't just look back; In 2025, the busy quartet will be on tour worldwide again and are more excited to play than ever: Look forward to one of the highlights of this fall!
Bob Mintzer is an American jazz and fusion musician who is one of the most influential and best of the last decades. From the mid-1970s he played in numerous style-defining big bands, such as the Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Big Band and the Buddy Rich Orchestra. Mintzer's close connection to big band music probably dates from this time; Since then he has composed and arranged hundreds of pieces for this format. Since 2016 he has been the chief conductor of the WDR Big Band, one of the world's most renowned jazz ensembles. He joined the Yellowjackets in 1990 and has been there continuously since then. He has played with Sam Jones, Peter Erskine, Jaco Pastorius, Miroslav Vitous, Bobby McFerrin, Kurt Elling and countless others and has received numerous honors and awards for his work.
Russell Ferrante is an American keyboardist, best known as the leader of the Yellowjackets. His professional career began in the 1970s, where he played in the Robben Ford band with Yellowjackets founding member Robben Ford. He has been the leader of the Fusion supergroup since its founding. In addition to this work, Ferrante has also appeared as a sideman for numerous other artists, such as Joni Mitchell, Sadao Watanabe, Eric Marienthal, Lee Ritenour, Chuck Loeb and more. Together with bandmate Mintzer, in addition to his stage and studio work, he works as a lecturer at the University of Southern California.
Dane Alderson is the youngest member of the Yellowjackets and joined the band in 2015. The top Australian bassist won numerous awards and scholarships in his youth, which cemented his reputation as an up-and-coming bass talent in his homeland. He was and is regularly on tour internationally and plays in a wide variety of line-ups.
The last member of the group is Will Kennedy, who played with the Yellowjackets in the 1980s and 90s and has been responsible for the drums again since 2010. Whether as the drummer for the fusion pioneers, as a session musician for television and radio or as a highly sought-after sideman: Kennedy is an incredibly groovy and versatile drummer who is an integral part of the Bay Area music scene and has had a significant influence on it. He worked with numerous well-known and style-defining artists such as Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Snarky Puppy, Esperanza Spalding, George Benson.
