Crooked Wing is the fifth album by These New Puritans and their first new studio album in six years. It was produced by Jack Barnett and long-time collaborator and Bark Psychosis frontman Graham Sutton. The album features a diverse and unpredictable lineup of collaborators - from Caroline Polachek to British jazz double bass veteran Chris Laurence. It is also gratifying that the new compositions will also be performed at Bratislava's MMC (Majestic Music Club) on October 26, 2025 as part of the EX:CLASS concert series. Tickets are already on sale.

It seems as if brothers Jack and George Barnett are doing nothing and taking a break from music. It is also true that with their group These New Puritans they made only five albums in their twenty years of existence. And it is also undeniable that after the period 2008-2013, in which they released three albums, they extended this release interval from three to six years.

In the meantime, however, they worked on various collaborations, such as with the fashion designer Hedi Slimane, or prepared the incidental music for the theatrical adaptation of the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. TNP have always set the highest possible demands on artistic quality, and each of their albums was a demanding project in which they materialized an idea that somehow caught their attention, with a story and visualizations.

This time they were fascinated by the sound of a bell ringing. Jack Barnett explains it this way: "I had to go through a very long and winding ravine to get to a small and isolated Greek Orthodox chapel that I stumbled upon. There was that bell, which I then recorded. That one strike of the bell started the whole album. It suggested a set of notes that led to one song, then another, and then another."

After returning to London, the pair began to form compositions from dozens and dozens of ideas in Jack's studio. The whole process is longer and more demanding also from the point of view that after the second album Hidden they write everything down in the score, then they record the individual parts as an ensemble and at the end the soloists are added. Only then does the real work of deconstructing and rearranging the material begin. This is what makes the recordings of These New Puritans so original and different-sounding.

The new song A Season in Hell, which is the second single after the title Bells, features the stuttering expressive sound of the drums, already known from the earlier recordings, which contrasts strongly with the otherwise almost meditative silence.

Themes of the album they overlap stories of underground worlds and machines, of inhuman love, light and death, which perfectly expresses the fragility of small human beings facing the noise of gears and the rattle of chains. So much for the upcoming album, which will be released on May 23, 2025.

Pressing beauty against brutality, a lullaby against cacophony - this has always been the goal of These New Puritans. Listening to new compositions will undoubtedly be a powerful artistic experience. They are going on a European tour in the fall of 2025, in which Bratislava will not be missing this time. Their premiere concert will take place on October 26 at MMC as part of the EX:CLASS series, which this year also featured the Swiss pianist and experimentalist Nik Bärtsch.
