About event

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Mann, we cordially invite you to a podium discussion connected with the reading of Mann's texts. How can we read and interpret the works of this classic today? What can his literary and journalistic work inspire us?

Thomas Mann (June 6, 1875 – August 12, 1955) is one of the most famous German writers and intellectuals. He won the Nobel Prize in 1929, and his novels and novellas are still among the most widely read. However, the public knows him not only as a man of letters, but also as a convinced humanist and democrat defending freedom.

After the rise of Hitler's regime in Germany, he became a public voice warning of the threats of Nazism, his involvement resulted in the revocation of his German citizenship, which led him to decide to accept citizenship in what was then Czechoslovakia. From 1942, he prepared radio speeches for the BBC under the name Deutsche Hörer! ("German listeners!"), in which he reflected on the current situation in Germany and the world. Today, we could call Mann an activist in the fight for democracy.

The invitation was accepted by experts in German literature and translators of Thomas Mann's texts, Miloslav Szabó from the Department of German Studies, Dutch Studies and Scandinavian Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Charles University in Bratislava and the translator of Thomas Mann's essays (Kalligram 2006) and Andrej Zahorák from the Department of Translation of the Faculty of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Warsaw in Nitra, current his translation of Mann's novella Death in Venice (Ikar 2025) was published. Author and translator Michal Hvorecký will talk to them.

The event will be in Slovak, admission is free.
