About event
With »value and madness. Contributions to Marx's Economic Criticism« will be published by XS-Verlag at the beginning of November, Thomas Maul's last monograph, which was planned during his lifetime and completed in manuscript. The book was originally scheduled to be published in May 2025. Thomas Maul died unexpectedly in January before he could give the edition its final shape.
With this extensive book, Thomas Maul's contributions to Marx's economic criticism are now available in one volume for the first time, supplemented by the previously unpublished text "Reconciliation without Messiah", which concludes the trilogy that began in 2014. Its overarching subject is a critical understanding of bourgeois civilization in its relationship to both the regression into the barbarism of anti-Semitism and National Socialism and to the 'positive' abolition under communism.
Starting from Adorno's previously insufficiently appreciated discovery of the contradictions of the commodity labor power, Thomas Maul's value-critical intervention attempts to develop its implications and think them through in a consistent manner. In doing so, the author succeeds in clearing up the myths and dogmas of both the traditional Marxists and the self-proclaimed overcomers of tradition, who now obscure any egalitarian, innocent and critical reading of Marx's original texts.
Thomas Maul saw the book as the conclusion of a double trilogy: The new third part of "Wert und Wahn" completes the one from 2014 with "Wert und Wahn 1" and "Wert und Wahn 2" published series of texts. Together with “Completing Capital” from 2019, these out-of-print titles are integrated into the new edition in a revised and reviewed form. Thomas Maul also saw the complete edition of “Wert und Wahn” as the conclusion of an overarching book trilogy, which also includes “Therefore Negative Dialectics” (2014/2024) and “Three Studies on Paul” (2014). The work, which is now published posthumously, is a passionate plea against the formal, real and psychological subsumption of man under capital.
Lukas Sarvari, editor of “Wert und Wahn” and close confidant of Thomas Maul, will present the book on November 11th at the Laidak.
