An engaging story about the life and work of the founders of modern dance. The performance combines dance images with historical commentary and animated work.
The production Those who walked before us was created thanks to an internal grant from the University of Performing Arts in Bratislava. The main goal of the grant was interfaculty cooperation. The performance was created by a creative team of 35 creators consisting of teachers and students of the school.
The subject of the performance is the book World Personalities of Modern Dance I., by the director of the performance and project leader Dominika Beňaková.
Every artistic direction has its giants, figures from history who stand on an imaginary pedestal. It is no different in the world of dance art. The foundations of modern dance were laid by the first generation of its creators: Loië Fuller, Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn. Modern dance was born from their dedicated and exhausting work, at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The young creators breathed new life into their long-forgotten choreographies, and their turbulent but admirable life destinies are gradually revealed on stage. They will thus return from the imaginary dance Olympus back to the theater. The mentioned works were almost not preserved, the starting point for their revival were only photographs and book descriptions. The dance performances will alternate with animations with historical explanations, so you will see how modern dance was created and learn a lot about it.
