About event

Tinariwen
return to Portugal to a concert in Lisbon live, on May 26
With their long desert robes and turbans or shesh tuaregues, the Tinariwen are the creators of what was known as “desert blues”, a style of music they themselves call “Assuf”, which also means “longing” or “homesickness” in Tamasheq. Exchanging the Kalashnikovs for guitars after participating in the 1990 Tuareg Rebellion, the Tinariwian are really rebels of rock ‘N 'roll, attracting people with their growl vocals, space guitar lines and palms rhythms. Over the past two decades, popular and regular guests have been festivals around the world, where they have done a lot to increase awareness of the Tuareg culture and identity. Though all members of Tinariwen come from Mali - especially from Kidal and the surrounding region - their music began in Tamanrasset, southern Algeria. Tuaregs have not been their own, but they are spread through the desert regions of Mali, Algeria, Libya and Niger. Ibrahim grew up in refugee camps in southern Algeria and it was in Tamanrasset that he received a guitar and met other Mali Tuareg musicians with whom he formed a group that was known as Kel Tinariwen (people of the deserts). In 1985, Ibrahim and other musicians moved to a rebel Toureg field in Libya, known as “Tin Mars” (March 2). Then the Tinariwen became the musical spokesman for the movement and their songs became widely known in the community, distributed and copied in cassettes.
