New Slovakia. Even so, at the beginning of the 20th century, the South Side neighborhood in Pittsburgh, where thousands of Slovak immigrants found their home, could be called.
For a vision of a new beginning, young Andy also arrives there together with the Jewish musician Poldi, whose life he saved in Hamburg. While Poldi quickly takes hold in America, Andy lives as a worker in the Jones & Laughlin ironworks, where, like most immigrants, he faces bullying and blackmail from the Irish foremen. Until one event changes everything and gives birth to the myth of the Slovak immigrant mafia and worker hero named Joe Magarac.
The story of friendship, courage and the search for one's identity historically faithfully captures the fate of Slovak immigrants in Pittsburgh, who managed to stand up for their community and its rights during the Spanish flu epidemic and the great steel strike.
Tomáš Hudák (1980, Košice) is a stand-up comedian, screenwriter and former journalist.
