The work of Tomáš Skála moves in the complementary areas of ink drawing and three-dimensional sculpture. Recently, he has been exploring the possibilities of using concrete as a final sculptural material, through various surface treatment, the involvement of color and composition from differently processed fragments. In the gap between the legacy of tradition, its breaking and its unique re-joining, he searches for the form of the contemporary sculpture. He mostly works with a human figure allegorically expressing personal psychic movements, turning points in personality development. On a more general level, he thematizes the archetypes of life roles and basic stories about finding one's own role, the desire for knowledge, uncovering secrets and overcoming fear. Just as it naturally connects motifs from fairy tales and geographically and temporally distant stories, it interestingly and uniquely combines sources of inspiration from classical sculpture, symbolism, various forms of modernism to contemporary artistic production, pop-culture motifs and non-artistic consumer visuality. Tomáš Skála has the gift of revealing and at the same time creating secrets, artistically touching feelings and states that are difficult to express in words.
