Group therapy where Shakespearean characters meet. Our characters are not the heroes of classic dramas, but today's people who sat in a circle and try to name out loud their faults, conflicts, anxieties and joys. The question is whether their problems have solutions - and whether they even need them.
The Group Therapy production is the result of the school theater process. Students of the Theater Faculty of VŠMU under the leadership of Eszter Katon, Kati Csikmák and Bence Hégli created the illusion of group therapy in which they found Shakespearean characters "today" through improvisation, analysis and search. in the sense that the text was created in cooperation with the cast.
Since the second-year students were studying Shakespeare, we wanted their characters to be based on Shakespeare's works. The first stage of the creative process was a thorough analysis of the original plays, from which the performers chose their characters to portray. This was followed by a period of free play in the space: after a month "at the table" came relaxation through improvisations and creative games (e.g. rehearsing Hamlet in ten minutes). In the next phase, the actors began to write the speeches of their characters - monologues and dialogues for predetermined situations (eg intervention).
Thus, the original Shakespearean characters were gradually transformed into contemporary people with their traumas, addictions and conflicts. We were able to write a theatrical text from the materials that we collected together with the actors during the long search process. The final stage was directing it; thanks to pre-preparation, analyses, improvisations and writing, the characters came to life naturally.
🔸 The characters of the Group Therapy production are based on the plays: A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Winter's Tale, King Lear, Richard II., Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and The Tempest.
