THE THIRTEENTH HOUR, a verse farce that retains its surprising relevance even after almost two centuries, is in many ways one of the most valuable and attractive comedies for today's audience. In it, the cottage brilliantly mocks power struggles, philandering and careerism in a small-town environment. Although it was written in 1835, its themes - manipulation, populism or political ignorance - are alarmingly current. The verse form gives the text a rhythm and swing that is both entertaining and intellectually stimulating. The Cottage uses irony, puns and hyperbole to create a comic contrast between form and content. The fictitious town of Kocúrkovo is a microworld in which the weaknesses of the entire society are reflected - from the petty bourgeoisie to political illiteracy. Today's audience can easily find parallels with their own surroundings and the present in the characters and situations.
