25 YEARS - THE FLAMINGO CONCERT

25 years of Turbostaat - Rewind to 2001... we're busy playing concerts, have a demo out and want to "finally" record our first record FLAMINGO, with Ulf Nagel (Kiel punk rock/hardcore veteran, active in several bands and has his own small studio).
We are excited. Turbostaat in the studio for the first time, the vinyl record in our mind's eye, really giving it their all, just like we have done live since the founding. Everyone as fast as they can, me a little faster and then it will be great.
We wanted to record BLAU AN DER KÜSTE as the first song - safe bet, since we already did it in the first band rehearsal in January 99, played it a lot and of course we're really good at it.
We get going and play like we always have. Song ends, short silence and then very dry Ulle Nagel's voice from the off: “It sounds like someone dumped a sack of potatoes over the drums”.
At first our reaction was: haha funny - sack of potatoes, until it became clear that there was nothing funny about it and that he didn't like anything, or at least not much, about this supposedly “safe bank”.
The tempo of the song, the rolls, attitude - nothing was right. And the already great excitement turned into panic and total uncertainty. If the first, simple and safe song goes so badly and causes problems, what will happen with the rest? How is this supposed to become a record?
23 years later there were quite a few records and “The Sack of Potatoes” from 2001 was the starting signal to reduce drums and technical incompetence to a minimum. As a result, the Tom slopes disappeared, swirls and “fill ins” were largely omitted and the brakes were pressed a little at speed. Studio remained a “fearful enemy” and only became something we were comfortable with from record number 3 onwards - but that’s another story. (Peter)
To celebrate 25 years together, we will play the FLAMINGO in its entirety again on October 24th, 2024 at TREIBSAND, LÜBECK.
