The first lecture of the Slavic Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic as part of the Week of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic festival will begin our Balkan journey this year: it will present the essence and development of the so-called Macedonian question, which is one of the perennially conflictual topics of the Balkan Peninsula. At the same time, it is not only a question of where to place the Slavic population there historically, but also the position and importance of Macedonia in the turning points of European history. The meeting therefore aims to answer who the contemporary Macedonians are and under what circumstances their identity was formed.
Lecturer PhDr. Miroslav Kouba, Ph.D., is a Slavist-Balkanist and deals with South Slavic cultural history. In his works, he pays attention to changes in cultural-historical narratives and interpretations of relevant symbols and emblems in the mentioned environments.
The lecture can be attended in person or listened to online.
