About event
The Faculty of Humanities cannot stand aside from this year's Humanities Week. They will participate in two screenings of very different films, new and canonical, as well as a debate on the therapeutic function of art, organized by the student Humanities Review (Humr).
**Screening of the adventure documentary Identity: A Film about Czech Graphic Design* *
The world-renowned auctioneer and Czech American Nicholas Lowry flies from New York to Prague to map out, in the role of a passionate collector, what shaped and defines the Czech national identity. Traveling around the Czech Republic takes him to iconic places of graphic design, including Zlín, Litomyšl, Brno and Pilsen, where he examines not only the work of Tomáš Bata, Josef Váchal, Alfons Mucha, Ladislav Sutnar, but also the famous Pilsner beer. The journeys of the quirky guide in a tartan suit also lead to South Moravia for the aesthetics of wine labels, he goes on a tramping trip along the marked routes of the Club of Czech Tourists, and meets the current generation of creators, such as Petr Babák, Martin Pecina or Aleš Najbrt. How is graphic design related to national identity? Can it somehow affect how we remember past events – for example, this year's 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution? What can the history of design say about contemporary Czech history? Co-director of the film and student of the master's program Oral history - contemporary history Kateřina Mikulcová, docent Martin Franc, (to be added) and moderator of the discussion, doctor Jana Wohlmuth Markupová, will search for answers to these and other questions together.

**Panel discussion: "Have the courage to use your own reason!" and the Enlightenment 300 years after Kant's birth**
The discussion will follow the theme of Humanities Week from contemporary perspectives . We will talk, among other things, about when to use one's own reason and when, on the contrary, to rely on authorities, or about the feminist critique of Kant's text, about who Kant excluded from the ability to think independently and use one's own reason. We will also focus on notions of autonomy and autonomous reason in contemporary debates about freedom of speech, particularly with regard to the dilemma of whether to limit hate speech and misinformation, or whether to consistently respect the autonomy of each listener, i.e. not restrict these utterances and leave it to the listeners to make these utterances they always judged themselves as acceptable/unacceptable or as true/false.
Discussing will be:
Mgr. Matej Cibík, Ph.D. (Centre for Ethics, Faculty of Philosophy, UPCE)
Mgr. Tomáš Koblížek, Ph.D. (Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic).
Mgr. Ľubica Kobová, Ph.D. (FHS UK)
M.Sc. et Mgr. Olga Navrátilová, Ph.D. (ETF UK)
