On the occasion of the opening of the season scigera 2025/2026, the Italian Cultural Institute of Berlin, in collaboration with RAI and the KLICK Kino of Berlin, presents the live screening of the Premiere of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

Years later Shostakovich prepared a new version which was staged in Moscow in 1963 with the title Katarina Izmajlova, after the superintendent of the Teatro alla Scala Antonio Ghiringhelli had tried in vain to obtain the premiere for the Milanese theatre. Today the Teatro alla Scala presents the 1934 version conducted by Maestro Riccardo Chailly and the debut of director Vasily Barkhatov.

The opera has become a manifesto not only of the female condition, but also of the freedom of art in the face of power.
