About event

The Age of Red Ants (Вик червоних мурах) by Tani Pjankova is a dramatic novel about the great famine that struck Ukraine in 1932-1933 and claimed the lives of millions of people.

The story follows the destinies of three characters, Dusje, Svyryd and Soli, whose lives gradually intertwine against the background of hunger, fear and oppression. With extraordinary power, the author describes not only the tragedy of individuals and their families, but also the disintegration of a traditional village under the burden of forcible collectivization and the cruel Soviet system.

The allegorical figure of Hunger also enters the plot, absorbing everything around it – a symbol of relentless destruction and the inhumane politics behind this historical tragedy.

A novel based on the authentic memories of witnesses, awarded Gogol National Prize, it is among the most important historical works of Ukrainian literature. It is a strong reminder that memory of the past is essential if the horrors are to be prevented.
