Understanding Eastern Ukraine

Black hands, black faces - only their eyes shine white. And even the teeth, if they are smiling. This is what Donetsk miners look like when they go out into the light and squint into the sun. This book tells about what Donbas was like before it became the epicenter of a brutal war. In it, Oleksandr Myched takes us directly to the black heart of Ukraine.
Bachmut. Pokrovsk. Konstantynivka. Sjevjerodoneck. Lysyčansk. Today, the capitals of the cruel war were until recently not only the centers of Ukrainian and formerly Soviet mining, they were also part of the remarkable universe called Donbas. something like a new beginning: eastern Ukraine is searching for its identity, cities are getting new names, a young generation is coming. And no one has any idea about the invasion, which is to come in a few years.
In his book Krv ti s koljem poměšam, Myched explores the mythology of mining towns, key figures of the region, stereotypes and archetypes. It shows us that this region has much more to it than just a layer of black dust. It is not only the Donetsk coal basin, it is also a proud population, ethnically and culturally diverse, which feels strongly connected to Ukraine and does not close itself off from the West.
The book, written in 2020, is an impressive polyphony about the past and present of Ukrainian exit. Today it is read as a story about lost history, people and cities, but also as a record of an endless love for one's country. The book is published in a translation by Veronika Goldiňáková.

Oleksandr Myched (1988), Ukrainian writer, journalist and now also a soldier. The author of nine books, among which his reportage opus Krv ti s kulím pomiešam (2020, Slovak edition: Absynt 2024) stands out, in which he presents a comprehensive picture of the past and present of the Ukrainian mining east in the time before the Russian invasion. For this book, he was nominated for the prestigious Yuri Shevelov Prize and it also appeared among the best books of the year according to the BBC.

At the beginning of 2016, Oleksandr Mikhed traveled around six cities in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, exploring the local life and the stories preserved in the archives. But the most important thing for the author is to hear the voices of local residents. By digging up layers of history and picking up myths, the writer tells the amazing history of the East, which British and Belgian investors, imperial and Soviet rulers tried to tame. How is one of the oldest skulls in the world connected with the founding of Donetsk? What price is given to the skin of a ton of mined coal? І яки истории заховано у вильних степах Дикого поля?
Олександр Михед shares unique conversations with famous writers, poets, and historians who were born in the East: Sergiy Zhadan, Allitka Kahidze, Igor Kozlovskyi, Roman Minin, Volodymyr Rafejeik and Elena Stiazhkina. People who, since the war, help to understand the horror of the new everyday life and understand the many voices of the Ukrainian Church. Mihed Oleksandr. He was born in Nizhin in 1988.
