Once Upon a Time in Crimea
The Crimean novel was written by Anastasija Levkova
The book Once Upon a Time in Crimea is an important text for understanding the history and culture of Crimea, as well as the complexity of the region. The story is based on real events and fates of Crimeans, while the text is imbued with Crimean realities and linguistic nuances.
The author Anastasija Levkova, through the main character, who lived her childhood and youth in Crimea, transports the reader to a world where the culture of the Crimean Tatars intertwines with the history of Ukraine. On the pages of the book, the reader meets Crimean Tatars, Karaites, Ukrainians, Russians, Germans, Jews, Greeks, and Crimean Armenians, and one by one opens the cabinets with family secrets. Together with the main character and her friend Aliye, the reader will travel from their childhood in the nineties to the Russian occupation of the peninsula in 2014, seasoned with trips to the ancient history of Crimea.
Once upon a time Crimea is an experiment in an unusual way. to open the continent to the peninsula and the peninsula to the continent. After all, even there, the world is there too. It is worth getting to know him and reuniting.
The book was not only shortlisted for the BBC Book of the Year 2023 award, but also presents a unique view of the complex region of Crimea. Anastasija Levkova
Anastasjia Levkova is a Ukrainian writer, cultural manager and teacher of creative writing. She is the author of the novel for young people No longer a girl, not yet a woman, the children's book Ašyk Omer and the popular factual book Bežný jazyk, How words are born and live. She is the coordinator of the Crimean fig literary competition and co-compiler of an anthology of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar prose, poetry and translations. Member of PEN Ukraine. Holder of the French Order of Arts and Letters. He speaks English, French and Polish.
Ondrej Hubinský
He was born in Zvolen. He studied English and Russian at the Faculty of Arts in Bratislava. While studying at the university, he participated in a study stay at Taras Shevchenko State University
in Kyiv, Ukraine. He mainly deals with translation and interpreting from Ukrainian. In 2023, he and prof. The book Na zakhid vid vijny na Skhodi (To the West from the War in the East) was published by Feliks Shteinbuk in Ukraine. He translated Serhij Žadan's books Boarding School (Absynt, 2023), Nebo nad Kharkiv (Brak, 2024), Once Upon a Time in Crimea (Dajama, 2024) and Vlk (Dajama, 2024) into Slovak.
