About event
"On February 25th, 2025 I heard the "Ulrike Schwarz' No Topic - Trio" with Ulrike Schwarz (as/fl), Uwe Oberg (p), SteDen Roth (dr) in the Kühlspot Social Club in Berlin and was thrilled.
Ulrike Schwarz' No Topic TrioUlrike Schwarz and Uwe Oberg have been working together for a long time and have a congenial partner for theirs in the young SteDen Roth Improvisations were found and played together for the first time at this concert.
The first piece already impresses with monk-like piano playing, repetitive saxophone motifs, dense, intense - but transparent - interaction and colorful drumming: exciting 13 minutes. And it continues: Ulrike Schwarz impresses with her independent, stubborn game. She uses new playing techniques not for their own sake, but as an extension of her musical means of expression. Uwe Oberg adds impressionistic soundscapes to her delicate slaps and SteDen Roth's bowed cymbals. Simple ideas combined with complex interaction – it can sometimes be harmonious. Beautiful melodies are not taboo, but are contrasted with clusters on the piano and sensitively pushed to the most intense heights with the brush on the drums. The pianist is bursting with ideas - harmonically beguiling and disturbing, the drummer gets everything out of the set with differentiated, delicate sound structures and expands the space with time and pressure.
On the transverse flute, Ulrike Schwarz's classical training is reflected in the tonally rich possibilities that she uses expressively - also in her flute solo - as an exploration of the instrument driven by her own curiosity uses. In the penultimate piece, I am particularly impressed by the combination of her voice and simultaneous saxophone playing, which I have never heard from anyone before.
The trio impresses with musical interaction - characterized by mutual curiosity and playful joy in surprises - and chamber music interplay,
in which melodic pieces are thrown back and forth. Modal and atonal phases are designed freemetrically through varying energy levels and degrees of density - quiet, almost meditative phases alternate with moments of raw wildness.
A real interest in encounters: the trio opens up spaces that invite you to confront your own visions and dreams - their interaction is exciting from the first to the last moment!"
