»Under Occupation – Above Hope« presents the work of the artist and author Shahd Al-Shamali. Shahd has been a resident artist at Ulme35 since 2024. During her Artist at Risk scholarship in Berlin, she worked on a documentary comic project. The resulting book celebrates on December 4th. in the Elm35 his first publication.
The book summarizes the dual reality of Palestinian life - a life marked by ongoing oppression and war, but at the same time sustained by an unshakable spirit of resilience and hope. Its title reflects the balance between the harshness of daily life under occupation and the firm belief in justice, dignity and a better future.
With striking illustrations and captivating narrative, the book documents lived experiences from Palestine and Gaza. It features drawings and testimonies depicting war, death, displacement, resilience and hope in the midst of destruction. In addition to stories of suffering and loss, it also contains historical and cultural fragments - tales of vibrant markets, ancient cities and the strength of communal bonds that preserve the memory and richness of Palestinian heritage.
More than just the presentation of a single work, the event is an open cultural gathering that invites audiences to engage with Palestinian narratives beyond the headlines. Through illustration, film, music and storytelling, Shahd Al-Shamali's work creates a bridge of compassion and understanding - helping to preserve, share and remember Palestinian voices.
The program includes a conversation with journalist Kristin Helberg about Palestinian narratives in global discourse, the screening of Shahd's animated short film "All Faces Smile at Me with Strange Eyes" and an exhibition of selected book pages and original artwork. The conversation and book are in English. Unfortunately, the music act has to be cancelled.
