The ceremonial launch of the book "The Real Middle Ages? Art & Ideology in the 19th Century" will take place on November 20 at 6:00 PM at the Institute of National Memory in Brno in the presence of its authors.
St. Vit in Prague, Notre-Dame in Paris or another majestic cathedral of one of the European capitals is for most of us the embodiment of the real Middle Ages. Few people know that these are actually often 19th century architecture or buildings that were fundamentally rebuilt in that period. The appearance of these monuments, rather than a testimony to the pre-modern past, is the result of romantic idealizations, nationalist disputes and economic interests of the 19th century. Our "real Middle Ages" has little in common with the original one, but it tells us a lot about the European culture of the last two centuries.
