About event
We cordially invite you to the launch of Pavel Máša's (MÚA) publication Living Monument of the Nation. František Ladislav Rieger as creator and object of Czech historical memory from the Czech modern history series, which will take place on Monday, June 22 from 5 p.m. in the Academia Literary Café on Wenceslas Square in Prague.
The book will be presented together with the author by Lucie Merhautová and Vratislav Doubek (MÚA).
Annotation of the book:
Few historical figures have such a place in the historical memory of contemporary Czech society an ambiguous position like František Ladislav Rieger. Despite the commemoration of his personality during significant anniversaries, he belongs rather to the forgotten figures of Czech history. How is it possible that someone who in his time was called the "leader of the nation" and enjoyed immense popularity among his fellow citizens, began to fade from public consciousness relatively quickly after his death? It is precisely this question that Pavel Máša tries to answer.
The author first follows Riegr's relationship to history, his contribution to the formation of Czech historical memory and his politics of memory. It then addresses Rieger's care for his own historical image and presents the various media through which Rieger wanted to shape the "image" of his public activity for contemporaries and future generations. Attention is also paid to how the society of the time reacted to Riegr's narrative. In the very conclusion, based on newly acquired knowledge and research to date, the author tries to think about the extent to which the old Czech politician was able to influence the shape of his place in the historical memory of Czech society by his actions.
Entry is free
The event is organized by the Academia Publishing House and the Masaryk Institute and the Archive of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
