About event
Shakespeare's Sonnets represent a new complete translation of one of the greatest gems of world poetry, Shakespeare's Sonnets (154 sonnets in the scope of 2,155 verses); a translation of the poem Milenko's Lament (329 verses) is assigned to them, which was published together with the Sonnets in the first, so-called quarto edition in 1609 and structurally and thematically follows them.
The translation is complemented by detailed notes and explanations in the amount of 500 manuscript pages, which have the ambition to help readers orientate themselves in the interpretation of the sonnets and their many contexts by summarizing the opinions of the editors of individual editions and Shakespeare scholars from the 17th century. until today. The book also contains a calendar of the life and works of William Shakespeare, an afterword and a list of references.
The collection of sonnets with the theme of friendship and love is undoubtedly one of the greatest jewels of world poetry, which even after four centuries sounds alive and contemporary. Masterful mastery of the royal poetic form, original imagery, metaphors and tantalizing mystery have been a strong attraction for poetry lovers for centuries.
