About event

The exhibition entitled Women, Champions, Artist 1300 - 1900 in the Wallenstein Riding School of the National Gallery in Prague presents impressive paintings, detailed sophisticated graphic works and beautiful embroidery created by women in periods when it was not easy for talented women to assert as a creator. For centuries, patriarchal society has provided women to very limited space to apply their talents. Many artists have been denied the opportunity to study at art academies, enter the painting guilds, lead art workshops or gain social status comparable to the position of artists-man. Valuable art works were created in the environment of female monasteries, although most of them remained unknown names. And since the 16th century, the names of gifted artists have appeared in the history of fine art, whose works, despite the restrictions given by the then social conventions, have gained deserved recognition. The exhibition presents works and interesting fates of Italian champions of the Late Renaissance and Baroque period, such as Sophonisba Ambuissola, Artemisia Gentileschi or Elisabetta Srani. Furthermore, visitors present artists active in the Netherlands and Central Europe, whose work of artistic talent was often associated with scientific knowledge - such exceptional personalities were Rachel Rachel Rachel and Maria Sibylla Merian. Here, as professional artists, women start to be applied only in the 19th century and the possibility of proper study at the Prague Academy opened only after 1918. The exhibition will introduce the works of several gifted painters that worked in Bohemia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. So we will also commemorate the work of Amálie Mánesová or Zdenek Braunerová, but also artists often wrongly neglected - Josefina Mařáková, Marie Louisa Kirschnerová and others. FREE.
