About event

The Malostranský hřbitov association invites you to a lecture following the footsteps of the first full-length horror film Der Student von Prag (1913), which traveled around the world more than a century ago and forever changed the poetics of cinematography. As a genius loci, Malá Strana charmed filmmakers as early as the times of Austria-Hungary. The author of the film - the highly controversial German writer Hanns Heinz Ewers (1871-1943) - was the first to understand the magic of cinematographic images, and together with the brilliant actor Paul Wegener, they filmed an immortal work that did not come down from the silver screen until the beginning of World War II. Only then was the Prague Golem born! Martin Jiroušek, a film scholar, historian and columnist, is consistently devoted to Ewers' work in the Czech Republic. During the evening, the audience will learn about the unusual fate of this work and its author, who for example wrote the 1st transgender novel Found Bird (Fundvogel) published by the Ostrava publishing house Protimluv. The world-famous work Der Student von Prag continues the tradition of Malostran creators who became famous as creators of Czech horror: Jan Neruda, Jakub Arbes, Gustav Meyrink, Emanuel z Lešehrad, Félix Achilles de la Cámara or Arvéd Smíchovský known as the Malostranský dábel. Come and see the unusual connection of old Prague with Faustian legends and early world cinematography.

Lecture Mgr. Martin Jiroušek, a film historian and specialist in the poetics of horror in multimedia forms, will take place on Thursday, December 5, 2024 from 5 p.m. at the branch of the Municipal Library in Prague at Smíchov, Nám. 14 October 15, Prague 5.

Free entry, without reservation and without barriers.

We look forward to seeing you!
