About event

We cordially invite you to another Evening of Philosophy, this time dedicated to the questions of thinking of our four-legged friends.

In society, the belief that thinking and intelligence are the prerogative of man has always dominated (and perhaps still dominates). Since the time of Darwin, however, scientific knowledge has revealed that we share much more with other animal species than we thought - and apparently this also applies to mental processes, despite the fact that non-verbal thinking is still not well defined.
At the lecture, we will take a closer look at the mental world of a domestic cat: how it is shaped by cat biology and physiology, how a cat perceives the world around it, how and what ideas it creates about it (and how it uses them), what its perception of time is, how it works with its own memory, what emotions and feelings it has, how - and whether - they differ from ours. Could we even talk about logic or rationality in connection with cats and their mental performance?

Mgr. Michaela Petrufová Joppová, PhD., philosopher, ethicist, translator, author of the monograph From pathos to ethics (2022), a collection of essays The Joy of Thinking (2024) and translations of Spinoza's Treatise on the Correction of the Intellect (2022) and Short Treatise on God, Man and His Well-Being (2025). In his research, he deals with the philosophy of B. Spinoza, metaphysics and theory of science, affective and cognitive philosophy and their neuroscientific connections.

As part of the program, at the subsequent text seminar, we will focus on excerpts from the book Archeology of Mind by Jaak Panksepp and Lucy Bivenová (2021). Texts and aids for the seminar will be available on site.

We cordially invite you!
