Ing. Jiří Michálek, CSc. He had a classic education and a wide range of knowledge. Huge ability to combine and will achieve a goal. He spent most of his creative life in politically unfavorable times. He also retained firm moral attitudes for which he was highly respected. His scientific contribution and creative abilities are valued on an international scale.
He is the author of one of the most important inventions of Czech origin, which are soft contact lenses. In addition to soft contact lenses, he also became famous for his work in polyamides. Silon was the result of his work in the research department of the Baťa plants in Zlín, where he started after the closure of Czech universities in 1939. In the post -war years he returned to the Czech Technical University and after a ban on pedagogical activities in the 1950s founded the Makromolecular Chemistry Chemistry. He and his colleagues dealt with the research of hydrogels. It was from them that the first soft contact lenses were cast and Professor Wichterle continued to improve their properties and the development of other hydrogel applications in medicine. Wichterle not only the facts but also the personal memories of the author. At the same time, it will be possible to see from nearby historical lens constructed from the parts of the Merkur kit.
