ABOUT MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH - PUBLIC DISCUSSION OF THE LEAGUE FOR MENTAL HEALTH
Men are less likely to seek professional help in the long term when faced with mental health problems. This trend has deep roots that can be found in historical and cultural norms.
In many societies, the image of a "strong man" who should be able to handle any problem without needing to express his inner feelings or seek support has been maintained for centuries. Men are so often expected to hide their problems, and this pressure leads to them seeing their emotional distress and mental health issues as a sign of weakness.
The League for Mental Health has decided to devote itself to this topic in the following period. An important factor is the societal stigma that still affects the way mental health is viewed. Men are often influenced by the idea that showing emotion or admitting vulnerability lowers their value in the eyes of others. This perception leads them to feel shame or fear that they will be rejected or misunderstood if they decide to seek help.
Societal stigma, along with this traditional image, creates a barrier that prevents many men from confiding in someone, be it loved ones or mental health professionals.
The presenter and columnist Timea Keresztényiová will discuss this topic with
🔵 director of the League for Mental Health Andrej Vršanský and
🔵 Prof. Robert Babeľ from Project HealthCare.
